Silent Jane Salvage began as an online business in 2014. Janene Bouck started a Etsy.com online shop to sell a hutch she had restored, a decaying hulk of a thing sourced from the roadside on large garbage day that she transformed into her Pareidolian Hoosier Top Oak Cabinet. After enjoying online sales, in order to build a local customer base, Janene entered her Silent Jane Salvage items & her artwork in several local vendor events & art exhibitions. Since then, the idea of Silent Jane Salvage has grown into a home business. Along with original vintage & antique items, Janene features her art & photography online, through exhibit & at her storefront gallery in Broadalbin. A grand opening of her tiny shop & gallery at 201 County Highway 155, Broadalbin, NY is scheduled for October 1, from 10-3.
In addition to the goods for sale at the storefront, Janene also offers Silent Photography, a photographic restoration & guided printing service. The customers of Silent Photography are diverse. Long-distance online customers span the country, using email to deliver the original images & discuss their custom project. Other customers are local folk who have damaged original photographs that Janene scans to restore or retouch. After the computer restoration is completed, Janene offers digital images or guided printing services to assist her customers with choosing the method of printing their images on paper, canvas, metal, wood or leather using a variety of print shops both local & national.
Janene believes a digital image can be recycled & reused endlessly with little environmental impact. One image can create a collage of memories, textures & light. Some of her digital images are absolute to the image as it was photographed, only slightly embellished using only the types of techniques available in a darkroom. Her digital photograph can also be painted digitally, utilizing an endless array of techniques to enhance the final image. In some cases, her final artwork may be built from multiple exposures &/or photographs then edited & recreated as a completely new image. Ranging from natural landscape vistas to apocalyptic zombie images, each composition is part of a journey.
Janene’s multi-media photography work titled “Glove City Swamp” has won the juror’s choice award at “The Art of New York” Annual Juried Art Show – 2016” juried by J. Bruce Schwabach at the Arkell Museum & Canajoharie Library Stone Wall Gallery in Canajoharie, New York, & won honorable mention for the Mary Cleland Art Award at the “2016 STATEWIDE SUMMER ART SHOW” at the Paul Nigra Center for Creative Arts, Gloversville, New York, August 2016. This piece is currently on display at the SVAN Artists’ Gallery at Vail Mills Fulton County Visitors’ Center. Janene regularly shows her work outside of SJS, one upcoming exhibition will be at the Arts Center Gallery in Saratoga May-June 2018.
Most of the materials used while creating Silent Jane décor & the subject material for her art & photography originate from the Capitol Region, the Great Sacandaga Lake area, the Adirondack Forest & the Mohawk Valley of Upstate New York. Her goal with any work is to use the most environmentally safe practices while creating art or restoring décor & furnishings from found or vintage items. Drawing on her education & experience in drafting, the graphic arts & interior design, she enjoys restructuring & embellishing while honoring the original form, aesthetic & history, as it applies. The restoration of an item destined for the landfill has always been personally fulfilling for Janene. As a native of Upstate New York, she is inspired by the natural beauty but confounded by pollution & waste. Whether working with photography, painting or creating from found materials, Janene is inspired by nature. She also drawn to the complexity of historical objects. Rust, patina & even decay deepen colors & textures & hold shadows more firmly within her work.
